Tutorial: Leek Head by einen Tutorial: Leek Head by einen
I've gotten several requests to do a tutorial, so I did one for my latest piece in Photoshop CS2.

Yes, I really am that generous!

Oh, and I don't pretend to know everything. In fact, a lot of stuff in this one could be done better, but no nitpicking 'kay? ;)

awesome tutorial intro!

VERY useful tutorial though. I use a similar process, except for the way I paint over, under, and around my line art or sketch. I'll have to try it this way on one of my next pieces.

Thanks! Hope you do more like these!

Do you have any videos of your painting process/ technique?

I like the way you blend colors, and your rim lighting looks great, quite different than how I use my own rim lighting, so I'm just curious as to other ways I could develop that!

I agree about the videos. Maybe he could contact The Gnomon Workshop and they'd be willing to pay him to make a dvd video series?

REALLY AWESOME TUTORIAL!!! Can you tell me though, do you use a pen tablet or pencil for sketching and such, cuz I don't have the luxury to go out and buy a pen tablet lol.

.... one more thing to ask.... what brush settings do you use to paint????
Reply
:iconeinen:
einen Featured By Owner Jun 26, 2008  Professional Digital Artist
Well, I change my opacity and flow settings several times throughout the painting so it's kind of hard to explain here. I suppose it's usually around 70% or something like that. The pen pressure makes it fairly flexible anyway. I also usually decrease the hardness of the edge of the round brush.

Several times or several hundred times? I find the pressure sensitivity of my tablet just doesn't cut it and so I turn it off and just keep adjusting the opacity constantly. Do you have any tips to offer in this area? I could really use some.

Also, I still can't honestly say I know when to adjust opacity vs adjusting flow. I'm pretty sure I understand what the difference between the 2 is now but the thought of adjusting flow never comes to mind when I'm working.

Would you consider doing a tutorial about opacity vs flow? And not just what the differences are but how you actually utilize those differences in a piece.

Many people here are capable of steps 1-5. The hard part in my opinion is going from step 7 to 8. I'd love to see a tutorial on just that stage.

.......one more question. How does increasing DPI help??
Reply
:iconeinen:

It's for an eventual print. A higher DPI makes for better prints.

increasing dpi means makes the image bigger (you can try it) to improve the dpi and the size is usually used when want to create some very detailed zones without losing anything. usually it's better than just make the canvas bigger.

Awesome colouring technique you have!
I'm impressed to see that you're not scared of using dodge and burn!
I have a query. Where does your sketch layer go?
I mean how did you merge it so well with the colours giving, finally, a 3D look? Please tell in an explanatory manner, as I am unable to figure it out myself. But seriously I love the way you paint!

Thank you! Well, I don't know how to explain it other than that I decrease the opacity of the sketch layer, merge it with the color layer and then paint over the lines with color.

Lovely walkthrough/tutorial. Always interesting to see how others works.

For one of the final steps do you use adjustments layers to change colors/depth etc or do you paint everything? I'm just curious. Since joining dA i know that many people start with a grey "model" and work with colors and adjustment layers later :aww:

Holy shit! I'm always amazed at the immense talents that digital artists have. I really want to learn how to paint like that.

Any particular hardware I need like a tablet or something? Or can I just do it with a mouse, some prayer, and a steady hand?
